The ALRB is the independent and impartial tribunal responsible for the day-to-day application and interpretation of Alberta’s labour laws. The Board administers and interprets the Labour Relations Code and other laws focused on unionized workplaces.  The role of the ALRB is to interpret and apply the legislation governing collective bargaining including: how and under what conditions a trade union may claim the status of exclusive bargaining agent; how the employer and union must bargain to reach or renew a collective agreement and  when the parties may have recourse to a strike or lockout. The ALRB granted the AUNP its founding union status and the certificates to exclusively represent NPs employed by AHS and Covenant Health. These certificates continue to apply to Alberta’s four public health agencies that arose from AHS during a transition in 2024-25.
