Anne Summach is a Full Teaching Professor and Director of Nurse Practitioner Programs at the University of Alberta. She has worked across acute and primary care in Canada and the United States, filling the roles of staff nurse, nurse manager and nurse practitioner before joining the Faculty of Nursing as a Teaching Professor in 2018. Anne has been at the forefront of nurse practitioner leadership in Alberta, having served as the president of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta as well as founding board member and president of the Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners, the only union for NPs by NPs in Canada. Anne is currently engaged in curricular design of a new master’s level degree, reimagining delivery of NP education within the Alberta context. As the chair of the CASN NP Educator Interest Group and the NP Specialty Education Working Group, Anne contributes to decision making and change at the national level, supporting innovation in NP education across Canada.

AUNP President’s History: 2021-2024

Alberta Union of Nurse Practitioners came into being formally (though by another name) in early 2021. After hearing from the Government of Alberta that NPs were going to be made a bargaining unit in the Health Professions Act in late 2020, the Board of the Nurse Practitioners Association of Alberta moved forward to establish AUNP as a legal entity and apply for official standing with the Ministry of Labour. The whole of 2021 was challenging for the Board and Executive, as AUNP faced challenges from other unions, as well as pushback from within the ranks of employed NPs. There were many competing views regarding how the NP profession should move forward in Alberta. The petition to be certified with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health was initiated, withdrawn, and then resubmitted in 2021, and AUNP was successfully certified as the bargaining agent for NPs within AHS and Covenant Health in December 2021.
The remaining 3 years of this presidency focused on the basics of establishing a brand new labour organization – hiring an Executive Director, establishing a financial presence, and continuing to build our partnership with Alberta Counsel.
The Board and Bargaining Committee worked incredibly hard from 2022 to 2023, fighting for a fair relationship with the large employers, and a space within the labour community. The President and Executive Director met with the Alberta government, the Alberta Federation of Labour, employers, Labour Relations, nursing associations, and NP groups across Alberta and Canada. Finally, in late 2023, a bargaining agreement was approved and supported by the membership, setting the stage for future agreements by NPs, for NPs.

Once the agreement was settled, then began the work of interpreting it. Moving from theory to operationalization always reveals discrepancies and loopholes, and the Board continues to navigate the agreement and relationships with members, employers, and external partners. Other health unions within Alberta have proved to be staunch supporters, a new reality as AUNP moved from an idea to fully launched and accepted.

With the AGM in February 2024, the inaugural leadership group was transitioned to a new Board, and the work continued.
